Undergrad Real Estate Club Washington, D.C. Trek

In February, 11 students from the Wharton Undergraduate Real Estate Club (WUREC) traveled to Washington, D.C. for one of their Spring Treks.

With Dr. Sklar of the Stella Group

First, the students heard a presentation on energy-efficient building technologies by Dr. Scott Sklar of the Stella Group. Dr. Sklar gave an overview of the technologies available for green building and emphasized the need for developers and planners to take full advantage of the cost-saving efficiencies of sustainable technologies.

The group then visited Boston Properties where Jake Stroman and Pete Onetti presented an inside look at the development process and gave students a tour of their new 2200 Pennsylvania and The Avenue developments. After Boston Properties, the students walked through the heart of Washington to the Treasury Building, with a tour of the building by financial counter-terrorism specialist Michael Greenwald.

With Amias Gerety at the U.S. Treasury

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Financial Stability Amias Gerety spoke about his career trajectory and being tasked with the mission of overseeing the implementation of TARP and oversight of banks with assets greater than $50B. Gerety advised students that it is important to stay informed about world events: "Read [Nouriel] Roubini-Dr. Doom-his reports will give you an idea of the risks in the financial system."

Departing the Treasury, the group made their way north to Chevy Chase, Maryland, where the JBG Companies hosted them for an information session. Concluding the evening was a joint networking event hosted with George Washington University, where Stan Sloter of Paradigm Companies spoke to the future of the D.C. real estate industry and gave some career advice to students.
