Wharton News

  • Center Director Professor Joseph Gyourko moderated a panel at the International Council of Shopping Centers Fall Management and Marketing Conference in Atlanta. The panel, entitled "How Other Industries Are Reinventing Themselves" concentrated on how industries have used the new technologies available today to reinvent themselves, the challenges they faced and the rewards they gained.

  • Professor Gyourko was cited in The Wall Street Journal this month (9/5/00) in an article on mutual funds. The article noted the recent strong performance of real estate mutual funds and quotes Professor Gyourko as saying, "We shouldn't expect 20%-plus returns year after year - that's unrealistic. We should see less volatility, less feast and famine. It should be more stable and smooth, with well-run companies posting returns more in the 11% to 13% range."

  • Wharton Real Estate Professors Chris Mayer, Todd Sinai and Joseph Gyourko organized a one-day conference this summer on real estate research. The August conference took place at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, MA and real estate and urban scholars from around the country attended to present and discuss research.

  • Professor of Real estate and Finance, Susan Wachter, who is also Assistant Secretary For Research and Policy Development at the Department of Housing spoke at the eighth annual ULI Mayors Forum in Charleston South Carolina. The forum discussed the topic of central city living. Following remarks by Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Wachter suggested that the aim of public policy should be "to make cities the revitalized heart of metropolitan areas."

  • The place of entrepreneurship in real estate is a fascinating and important area of interest for Wharton students. On Friday, September 22 the students had an opportunity to focus on entrepreneurial opportunities in real estate at a series of panels sponsored by Wharton Real Estate, Entrepreneurship and Private Equity Clubs. Center Director Joe Gyourko moderated the "Private Equity and Capital Markets Panel." The three panelists were Dean Adler of Lubert-Adler, Jim Corl of Cohen & Steers and Dan DiLella of Berwind Properties. Professor Peter Linneman was the moderator of the second panel, which focused on Development. His panelists were Carl Dranoff of Dranoff Properties, Jeff Rhodes of The Rhodes Company and Jeff Albert of Princewood Properties. The final panel addressed the role that "dot-coms" play in real estate. Associate Director Asuka Nakahara was the moderator and guest panelists were Sherman Ragland of Realoffers.com, Guy Shannon of CityFeet.com and Mike O'Neill of Preferred Real Estate Investments. Professor Peter Linneman spoke on Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Real Estate. The program has been well subscribed and a full report on the event will appear in next month's newsletter.

  • Interest in real estate is increasing at Penn and real estate classes and clubs have seen a sharp rise in enrollment. Two new real estate clubs have been formed this year, one at the Law School and another at the Graduate School of Fine Arts. The clubs will work closely with the Wharton Real Estate Clubs and are looking forward to a constructive and fruitful relationship.
