Wharton Real Estate - Best in the Country!
An article highlighted in the June issue of REITStreet reports that according to corporate recruiters, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania is the best business school in the country for learning about real estate.
Professor Inman Recipient of Prestigious Award

Dr. Robert P. Inman, Miller-Sherrerd Professor and Professor of Finance, Public Policy, Management, and Real Estate is this year's recipient of the Helen Kardon Moss Anvil Award. The award is given to one faculty member "who has exemplified outstanding teaching quality during the past year" and is elected by the MBA student body. In addition to receiving a cash award, the recipient is also recognized at Spring Salute and graduation. Professor Inman teaches the Urban Fiscal Policy course in the Real Estate Department. |
Professor Joseph Gyourko named Trustee Fellow of the ULI Institute
Professor Joseph Gyourko, Martin Bucksbaum Professor of Real Estate and Finance and
Director of the Zell/Lurie Real Estate Center recently was named a Trustee Fellow of the Urban Land Institute. His three-year term commences July 1, 2001.

Professor Susan Wachter Quoted in Business Week
Business Week quoted Dr. Susan M. Wachter, Professor of Real Estate and Finance in an article entitled Is Recession Inevitable? Housing starts and sales once led to a downturn as banks would stop lending and borrowers would grow scared. "But now, banks know they can sell the loans they make to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac". And "borrowers use adjustable-rate mortgages with the thought that when interest rates go down, they will refinance", said Professor Wachter.
Dr. Wachter also spoke at the Economy.com Spring Conference, addressing The Role of Real Estate in the Business Cycle. The conference was held this month at Penn State University’s Great Valley Campus.
Globe St. Com Reports on Findings of SIOR Study Conducted by Professor Joseph Gyourko and Mr. Asuka Nakahara
Globe St.Com reported on the newly released first phase of a study funded by the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors and conducted by Zell/Lurie Center Director, Professor Joseph Gyourko and Associate Director, Asuka Nakahara. The first phase of the study "shows the depth of the commercial market with some staggering statistics, and suggests that those on the outside of the industry may be itching to get in on the action."
The statistics include findings that an estimated 7.4 billion sf generates annual lease revenues of $115 billion, and an estimated 22.9 billion sf of industrial space brings in yearly lease revenues of $69 billion. "These figures will make even the most experienced of brokers in the largest markets stand back and say, ‘Whoa,’" says Steven Podolsky, President of the SIOR educational foundation. Other key findings include statistical information on multi-family housing and the industrial sector. Results of the second phase will be released next month and will survey online brokerage efforts and e-commerce strategies. The final phase will analyze how technology will impact brokerage businesses and their affiliates.
Associate Director Asuka Nakahara to Address CREW and REALCOMM
Asuka Nakahara, Associate Director of the Zell/Lurie Real Estate Center, will address members of the Philadelphia Chapter of Commercial Real Estate Women on career management on June 21. Also in June, Mr. Nakahara will participate in a Dallas REALCOMM panel discussing "Commercial Real Estate MegaTrends".
