Wharton MBA Real Estate Club

It has been an exciting and successful year for the Wharton MBA Real Estate Club. The club continues to have record student membership of more than 250 members.

On Tuesday, November 15, 2005, the finance panel featured Daniel M. DiLeila of BPG Properties; Jackie Hamilton of Lehman Brothers; David King of First Point Partners; and Jake Reiter of Wells Fargo Real Estate Group. The development panel on Wednesday, December 7, included Allison Wilson from Anchor Health Properties; Charles Elliot of Dewey Commercial; Bob Chagares of High Street Equity Investors; and Brad Klatt of Roseland Property Company. Professor Asuka Nakahara moderated both panels.

The club has organized a series of lecture- and case-based "Master Classes" with accomplished local practitioners to review t real estate financial analysis, private equity valuation, and an overview of the development process. In addition to providing speakers, the club has organized formal education and training sessions for students without significant prior real estate experience.

Recruiting this year has been particularly active. The January Real Estate Career Fair brought 67 companies to campus, including several large organizations with positions in finance, development, property management, and acquisitions. The MBA Real Estate Club has organized several career treks this year to help introduce students to the variety of options in real estate and the types of firms looking to hire MBAs. Treks have been conducted in Philadelphia and on the West Coast; more are planned for Washington, D.C. and New York in the coming weeks.

Wharton Undergraduate Real Estate Club

With more than 120 active members and numerous club activities, the Wharton Undergraduate Real Estate Club has had a stellar year. During the fall semester the club arranged site visits to local development projects, including the newly constructed Cira Centre, the Liberty Court Townhomes in Society Hill, and WXPN. Back on campus, the club organized events to expose members to different real estate careers.

There have been excellent career opportunities within real estate for undergraduates and almost all Seniors have been offered full-time positions and also more summer internships becoming available within the industry.

School of Design Real Estate Club

The School of Design Real Estate Club includes more than 40 members from the graduate disciplines of architecture, city planning, landscape architecture, and historic preservation. During the fall 2005 semester, members solicited the knowledge and direction of mentors via the Zell-Lurie Real Estate Center; participated in a Real Estate 101 session graciously hosted by Wharton Real Estate Club leaders Tom Wang and Jeff Harmer; attended and volunteered at the Zell-Lurie Fall Members' Meeting; and took part in numerous site visits and panels offered throughout the university.

The club wrapped up the semester with a holiday party at the WXPN/World Café Live building, where we got a tour and talk from the café's founder. In the spring 2006 semester, we look forward to a career panel with School of Design alums working in architecture, construction management, acquisitions, finance, and redevelopment. We have possible site visits to Liberties Walk and the Navy Yard in the works. As is tradition, we'll end the year with an April mixer. We hope to be able to invite members of the other clubs.

The School of Design Real Estate Club is committed to cross-disciplinary involvement, not only among its own members but also with the undergraduate, law, and MBA clubs. Penn had 12 teams register for the ULI Student Urban Design Competition, due in part to the efforts of the Wharton and Design clubs to bring interested students together to form teams. Each team represented at least three disciplines, including MBA, city planning, landscape architecture, historic preservation, and architecture.
