Housing Markets
The New York Times quoted Joseph Gyourko, Martin Bucksbaum Professor of Real Estate and Finance, in "Farewell, Condo Cash-outs," about the "Great Sell-Off" of condos in New York City, February 17, 2006.
Wharton real estate professors Joseph Gyourko and Todd Sinai were also quoted in a March 3 New York Times article entitled, "From Dutch History, a Real Estate Lesson." Gyourko and Sinai maintain in the article that New York City is a 'superstar' city, a place so desirable that it can sustain "ever-increasing" prices compared with less-sought-after cities.
Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, author of "Love and Economics: Why the Laissez-Faire Family Doesn't Work," cited Gyourko's research in her Townhall.com column, Marriage in the City, March 20, 2006 about why housing prices in Manhattan are so high.
Linneman Panelist at Wharton Economic Summit
The Wharton Economic Summit was covered on CNBC, February 1, 2006, emphasizing current and future economic trends. The summit was launched in conjunction with Wharton's 125th Anniversary celebrations. Dean Patrick T. Harker spoke at the event and Peter Linneman, Albert Sussman Professor of Real Estate, Professor of Finance and Business and Public Policy, served as a panelist. Zoning and Housing Prices
Land use regulations and zoning battles crowd out smaller developers, wrote Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Andrew Cassel in "The Economy/Housing Bubble, zoning boards," on Friday, April 7, 2006. Citing research done by Professor Joe Gyourko, he wrote, "zoning might be the driver behind the real estate boom."
The Perfect House
Witold Rybczynski, Martin Meyerson Professor of Urbanism and Real Estate, lectured to the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, and to the Arts and Science Club of Philadelphia. His book, The Perfect House: A Journey with the Renaissance Master Andrea Palladio, was recently published in Chinese.
Investing in Real Estate
Susan Wachter, Richard B. Worley Professor of Financial Management, Professor of Real Estate, Finance and City and Regional Planning, was interviewed about opportunities and challenges in the housing sector on CNBC on February 8, 2006. She was quoted by Reuters in an article about the value of real-estate investing, February 15, 2006.
International Housing Finance Program
Director Drs. Marja Hoek-Smit was a featured speaker at the World Bank Conference on Housing Finance for Emerging Economies, held in Washington, D.C., in March 2006. During her spring break she conducted a workshop in Brazil on designing housing policies to further the expansion of private housing markets and housing finance systems.
The International Housing Finance Program's First Executive Education Program in China, organized jointly with the People's Bank of China and the World Bank a housing finance program this April for senior finance and housing experts from the public and private sector. The focus of the course will be on housing market analysis, the development of housing finance systems-risks and profitability, safety and soundness of the housing finance sector, and down-market expansions of housing finance. Professors Richard Herring and Marja Hoek-Smit of the Wharton School will be joined by colleagues from the World Bank and senior Chinese officials in conducting the training program.
